Crypto Index a crypto portfolio app

A mobile app for tracking crypto portfolios: it shows the whole portfolio in one place and works out the buys and sells needed to rebalance it.

Anyone who invests in several cryptocurrencies has their money scattered across wallets and addresses, while prices move by the minute. It is hard to see what the whole is worth, and harder still to keep a deliberate mix, because the coins that rise quietly crowd out the rest.

Crypto Index shows the value and make-up of the whole portfolio on one screen. Addresses can be typed in, scanned from a QR code or even picked out of a photo, and the app keeps the balances up to date on its own. There is no sign-up: the addresses are stored only on the phone.

To rebalance, the user picks a benchmark index, such as the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market value, and the app works out exactly what buys and sells would bring the portfolio's composition in line with it. The app came out on the App Store and Google Play. The website also compared how different crypto indexes had performed in the past; the chart below is built from that historical data.

Crypto indexes in 2017

  • Bitcoin: 15×
  • TOP10, weighted by market value: 22×
  • TOP10, equal weights: 117×
  • CRIX (market benchmark): 25×
The Crypto Index website's historical data on a logarithmic scale, taking the value on the first day of the period as 100. By the end of 2017, the equal-weight index of the ten largest cryptocurrencies stood at more than a hundred times its starting value, bitcoin at close to fifteen times.

I now put that experience to use designing systems, reviewing them and managing their technical risks.
